The Value of Vocational Education

"Tell me something and I'll forget it, show me something and mabye I'll remember it, involve me and I will remember it"

Confucius

Students at Yap High School are engaged in daily experiential learning and sustainable living experiences in a range of voacational classes from Sewing to Agriculture. In these courses they use high level thinking skills in the application of mathematics and science where they plan, design, and implement real life projects. Agriculature classes have used sustainable farming techniqes to cultivate crops of vegtables that are sold to further support their program and provide beautiful, organic produce to the school and community.

The Construction class has taken down an old Koyeng to build a new one in it's place with local materials that preserve the architectual Yapese tradtion. In sewing classes, students also apply mathematics in designing garmets that capture traditional designs. The ancestral knowledge these students take part in with these hands-on construction and creative projects make them this generations conservators of the Yap culture.

Quite often the need and benefits of Vocational Education are diminished; however, they truly serve to enrich and extend learning in core curricular areas of math, language, science and the humanities. The Vocational Classes produce some of the most beneficial project-based learning experiences few schools around the world can compete with. Congratulations to the teachers and students involved in these enriching experiences, for what you DO at Yap High, will be knowledge and skills you can use for the rest of your life.
